Since opening our doors in 1997, Welkom Square has grown alongside the city itself — adapting, expanding, and renewing our space to meet the changing needs of our community.

From humble beginnings, we've welcomed families, supported local entrepreneurs, hosted national brands, and created a safe and accessible space for everyone in Welkom and beyond. Every store, service, and amenity has been carefully curated to make shopping easy, enjoyable, and community-focused.

Our History

From 1997 to Now

1997 – Welkom Square officially opens, bringing modern retail to the heart of Welkom’s CBD. Anchored by Game, the centre quickly becomes a staple in the Free State shopping landscape.

2004 – 2005 – Major upgrades and renovations enhance the centre’s layout, parking facilities, and tenant mix — positioning Welkom Square as a modern retail destination.

2010s – Expansion of the tenant mix includes the arrival of key national brands, tech stores, fast food outlets, and local businesses — reflecting the evolving lifestyle of the community.

Today – Welkom Square continues to thrive as a vibrant shopping destination with 29 stores and services, from fashion to fitness, electronics to eateries — and with 3 open shop opportunities, we continue to grow.
